Fun in Kern Valley

Last week we went to the lake and while there we decided to hike part of the Whiskey Flat Trail. On Wednesday we hiked in from the bottom of the trail (the end of Burlando Rd) about 4 miles in and then back out. On Friday we hiked in from the top of the trail (over the bridge at McNally's) about 3 miles in and then back out again.

Here are some of the pictures I took. We had a great time and loved being away from  it all!

Crossing Bull Run Creek. Glad that this bridge is maintained.

Here the flowers give hope to the area that was burned last year.

Nice to see the river from the other side.

Another creek; this one required hopping rocks to get across.

Here we are at the top of the trail on Friday. This is where we will start when we do the whole trail (14.5 miles) at the end of the month. It's tougher at the top.

This creek had a bridge too - a log and a rope!

Ray found a track on the path.  I thought it was from a racoon until we checked the track poster at the ranger station. It looks like a bear track except that it only has 4 toes and on the poster there were 5 toes. ??

OK, so maybe it was a bear!! And yes they do it in the woods!

The clouds were there, but the rain waited until we left the valley.

The rock under this tree is where we stopped for lunch (granola bar, orange & water).

We saw a waterfall from here. Look at the top of the mountain in the middle of the picture. It's the Salmon Falls. That's another trail that we need to consider.

Here the trail overlooks the river.

Later that night - the view from our balcony of the moon coming over the mountain. The moon was very close to the earth last weekend.

We had a great time and will be going back soon to tackle the whole trail!
